Entry Procedures for Berkshire Grammar Schools
- There are six grammar schools in Berkshire.
- Slough Area (4 schools)
- Reading Area (2 schools)
Slough Area
Slough Consortium:
There are three schools in the:
- Langley Grammar 145 places. Mathematics and computing specialist
- Herschel Grammar – 120 places. Technology specialist
- St Bernard’s Catholic Grammar School Catholic (Voluntary Aided – co-ed.) – 120 places. Humanities specialist
Entry is by examination only. Langley and St Bernard’s do not have a catchment policy, Herschel has introduced a catchment policy for 2010 entry. The examination consists of two NFER multiple-choice papers (verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning). Children sit the examination in November of year 6.
External candidates who are outside of the main catchment areas in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire sit it on the first Saturday in November. Internal candidates sit the exam on the Thursday before in their own primary schools.
Application Deadline – Monday 6th October 2009
- Children at Primary schools in Slough will sit the Consortium examination on Thursday 5th November 2009.
- Children at Primary schools outside the Slough area will sit the examination on Saturday 7th November 2009.
Applications are made to the schools directly, but schools are to be listed in preference order on the Slough Consortium form. A score of 111 is needed to be eligible for a grammar school place but preference is given to higher scores when oversubscribed.
Results for the consortium will be available in early December.
Slough Grammar (Foundation – co-ed.)
- 145 places Language + Sciences specialist
Entry is by examination only. Again no catchment policy operates in this school. The examination will consist of three NFER multiple-choice papers (mathematics, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning). Children sit the examination in the September of Year 6. To register to take the 11+ examination for Slough Grammar you will need to complete a Slough Grammar School 11+ registration form (obtainable from the school) and return it by the published deadline. In addition to this you will need to complete your Local Authority Common Application Form (CAF). You must get your CAF form from your LEA’s Education Department. You will receive detailed information about the examination arrangements immediately after the closing date for applications.
- Application Deadline – Friday 26th June 2009.
- Children at Primary schools in Slough will sit the Slough Grammar School examination on Saturday 19th September 2009.
- Children at primary schools outside Slough will sit the Slough Grammar school examination on Saturday 26th September 2009.

Results for Slough Grammar should be available before the CAF deadline. If your child has reached the pass mark (usually 111) he/she will be eligible for a place at Grammar school. There is no guarantee of a place as places will be allocated according to children’s test scores and there may be more children passing the test than there are places available.
All firm offers of places at schools will be made by your Local Authority on or after 1st March 2010.
Reading Area
Kendrick Girls’ Grammar School – 96 places
Entry is by examination only at Kendrick Girls. No catchment policy applies. The entrance tests will be taken at Kendrick School. There will be two tests each of length approximately one hour. The examination consists of two NFER papers (verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning). Children sit the examination in November. No past papers are available but similar papers can be purchased from this website. Currently these are “11+ Practice” (standard version) published by NFER Nelson.
Applications must be made on the appropriate Local Authority (LA) common application form. In addition, applications must be made directly to Kendrick School.
- The tests will take place at Kendrick School on Friday 20th November 2009.
- The home LA will offer places on behalf of Kendrick School in March 2010.

Reading School (Boys) day – 100 places; boarding – 12 places
Reading School has day and boarding places available and timing of entry procedures for these are different. Entry is by examination only. Preference is given to designated area (catchment) for day boys see Reading School website for list of postcodes (roughly a ten mile radius).
Day applicants sit the examination in November of year 6 and boarding applicants sit the examination in the January of year 6. There will be three tests each of length approximately one hour. The tests will cover:
- Reasoning [verbal and/or non-verbal (abstract)]
- English
- Mathematics
Commencing 2008 – entry exam will be age standardised. No past papers are available and no further information with respect to the tests will be given. Tests are taken at Reading School.
Dates
- Closing date for applications: Friday 16th October 2009.
- Date set aside for the tests: Friday 20th November 2009.
Results for day places will be issued by the L.A. on 1st March 2010.
Boarding
Closing date for applications: Tuesday 5th January 2010 Date of test -Thursday 7th January 2010 (Tests are taken at Reading School).
However parents who reside in England must complete a Common Application Form and return it to their Local Authority no later than Friday 16th October 2009.
