11 Plus Exams Bromley

Entry Procedures for Bromley Grammar Schools

Parents resident in the London Borough of Bromley should complete the Bromley LEA Common Application Form (CAF). If the child attends a Bromley primary school the CAF will be issued by the child’s school in September. If the child attends an independent school or a primary school in another LEA the form will be available direct from Bromley’s Admissions Team at the Civic Centre (please telephone for advice on 020 8313 4044).

The CAF form should be returned to the Primary school where your child attends or directly to Bromley’s Admissions Team by 21 October 2006.

The two grammar schools also have a separate Supplementary Information Form (SIF) which must be returned by 20 October 2006 to the Schools in order for over subscription criteria to be applied.

Admissions for Newstead Wood School for Girls

The Entrance Test is on Saturday, 11 November 2006.
The entrance test consists of two NFER multiple choice papers:

  1. Verbal Reasoning – 45 minutes
  2. Non Verbal Reasoning – 40 minutes

If your daughter has a medical condition or disability which require special arrangements you should inform the School when returning the Supplementary Information Form (SIF).

You should not allow your daughter to sit the test if she is unwell as now allowance will be made for under-performances. You should inform the Head teacher I advance of the test and provided there is supporting medical evidence your child can sit the exam on an alternative date.

The Newstead Verbal Reasoning Multiple Choice Tests

The Verbal Reasoning Test will last for 45 minutes. The questions are set by NFER (National Foundation for Educational Research).
The questions typically ask the candidate to elect one answer from five options but they have sometimes sought two answers from five or six. The answer sheet is self-explanatory (supplied with familiarisation pack – see below) and requires the child to mark a horizontal pencil line, a bit like an A4 page version of the National Lottery slips. The answer sheets will be marked electronically.

The appropriate familiarisation pack for this exam is:

NFER Nelson Verbal Reasoning Multiple Choice Practice Tests Pack

NFER only publish four verbal reasoning familiarisation papers therefore these papers should be used sparingly and it would be prudent to save some of these for the final build up of the examinations. This pack contains all four.

Children usually show the greatest improvement between the first and second or first and third verbal reasoning papers they attempt.
The verbal reasoning questions test intelligence, speed and accuracy through a series of questions based on vocabulary, sequences, patterns and decoding.

These exams are based on 15 types of verbal reasoning questions .

You can see get a feel for these types of questions by looking at the interactive Eleven Plus Exams Verbal Reasoning Volume 1 CD demo and reviewing the first 15 types.

Essentially verbal reasoning exams breakdown to two key tasks: mastering the techniques for these question types and possessing a strong vocabulary, rumoured to be around 2,500 to 3,000 words.

Practice material comes in all shapes and forms: practice papers, e-papers (pay and download 11plus practice papers), interactive CDs, lessons in the post, websites that coach your child online. Though final examination is a pencil and paper examination many children respond to other forms, such as the interactive CDs. Ultimately your objective as parents is to master techniques and build the vocabulary for this exam.

Our recommended acquisition list for verbal reasoning would include:

There is a lot of practice material available in verbal reasoning, most of it relevant in that it build up your child’s mental agility and more critically their vocabulary.

The Newstead Non-Verbal Reasoning Multiple Choice Tests

Broken into four separate 10 minute tests with short practice time before each 10 minute session.

The Non-Verbal Reasoning Test consists of four 10 minute sections. Before each section there will be a short practice section.
