Can anyone help?

I remember reading a great thread recently in which a couple of clever posters had summarised the 5 or 6 (or more??) basic types of story-themes typically asked for - the I-was-scared-but-survived; the summer's / winter's day; the monster (may have got these wrong but you get the ghist). Problem is, I can't find this thread now. Any suggestions where I should look?

Hope so

Thanks Steve. Do you remember the one? I know I'm not imagining it but search as I might, & STILL no joy. Thanks for looking.

There was one in Kent recently listing the 6 subjects given - probably about 3 weeks ago.

Thanks rosered. Your suggested thread does contain some very good topics but there was another thread with more generic types of subject and I still can't find it!

You have found it!!! Thank you, thank you!

Now just have to make use of it, which I think will take even more effort than that involved in finding it

I have copied here some (imho) interesting titles from some English essay writing books that I have, that I thought may make useful practice for pupils preparing for their eleven plus English essay writing exam. In some instances, I’ve slightly modified the title to make it more appropriate for 11-year-olds.

The actual books are prepared by Abraham Sung (see scans):

Here’s the first batch of titles:

• Break time at school.
• Write a story on: A lost key.
• Is life too hectic to enjoy fully?
• My favourite memories.
• A farewell party.
• An attempted robbery.

Some more challenging titles for those who think the above are easy peasy:

• Describe the scene and the activities at a bus station.
• What are your reactions to discipline? How far is it necessary both at home and at school?
• The twentieth century is an age of greed. Do you agree?
• In what respects does the life of your generation differ from that of your grandparents?
• Write about how people from your area earn their living and how various jobs affect family life.
• Discuss the good and bad effects of competition in modern life.

Happy writing! :D
