What a great post guys! Especially I was feeling a bit supersensitive as my DD has been consistently graded 4B at the moment.....and I think she writes fabulous stories, full of imagination and dramatic language. But I can see how she falls down on the rest of VCOP and I know she's meant to be doing more work on connectives.... Hmm!! Dont want to stifle her enthusiasm and creativity...

This word connective seems to come up in every school report but not in between. My dd complies with it by starting every sentence with then. Amber, yes that is why at some schools infants are using however and subsequently.

It is all a mystery to me. We had newspaper report home works recently - I don't see the feedback. I'm hoping we can get by without too many writing formulae being drilled in so she can develop her own style when she's older.

Notwithstanding this, (good connective?), I might take a peep at the rising star English books at the various levels.

not a connective..they join things..and, but, so ..

adverbial phrases are the ones that get me..a phrase which takes the role of an adverb...apparently, anyone who is anyone in the fancy writing stakes should start sentences with one
