Using Question Papers for rough Workings?? Allowed or not?

Does anybody know, perhaps from previous experience, whether boys sitting the Reading Boys School tests are allowed to write on the question paper or not? My DS has picked up this habit for his 'rough workings' and I think it might be a hard one for him to break!!

Had the same issue with my DS1 a few years ago, I emailed admissions who said they wouldn't be penalised for writing on the paper but on the day the invigilator said no writing on exam paper use the rough paper provided.
