11 Plus Exams Forum

Hi,

My daughter is in year 5 and she is incredibly keen to go to Kendricks. We are in the catchment and loved the school when we visited it recently.

Any advice on how we should go about revising for the exams? I'm aware that there will be many who have just sat the exams. She has started tutoring and thats great but I feel we should be doing more at home with her. Hope it went well for all those girls

There are lots of books of verbal and non-verbal reasoning you can buy - various posts on here explaining the relative difficulties of them all, which I can never remember!

General vocab work, plenty of reading etc.

What's she doing with the tutor?

I won't know for a couple of weeks whether my approach has had the desired result but here it is anyway.

VR:
we went through the 4 Susan Daughtrey books (lost interest part way through book 4 as they were all very similar). The IPS series were a good entry level but don't contain all the types you need - start with them and work up. They do 10 min tests once you have been through the different types of question.

NVR:
we didn't really get on with the AE tuition 'how to' books that people had recommended, the GL assessment ones were a bit better. Mostly we just worked through sample questions.

vocab:
reading out loud, Patricia's word lists, we also found some ipad word game apps

We didn't use a tutor but did do the Sutton Mock as an introduction to the exam experience

general:
times tables, soduko, puzzle books

At present she is going through the various techniques and has a little homework. After reading through some posts, I don't feel I'm doing enough with her myself!

She attends a school that does not help at all and but has just become a test centre for the 11plus! There are only a few in her class that are considering the 11plus. My daugher is very bright but I'm aware that proper coaching will be required to pass the 11 plus and the Kendricks exam.

Kendrick really like to mix in Vocab and maths into their questions, they also seem to require a broader general knowledge.

Reading, technique and speed will all come in time so do start off at a steady pace.

That confused me too - Berks 11+ all happen in the relevant schools don't they? Maybe OP is Bucks?

We do live in Berkshire but the school my daughter attends never actively encourages the students to try for the 11plus. It has only become a test centre this year.

still not sure what you mean by a test centre - Kendrick exam takes place at Kendrick school, Reading Boys exam takes place at Reading Boys school, no concept of a test centre there.

Maybe I don't need to know - am just distracting myself during the wait
