It could be a school anywhere in the authority. It would be a school that had places once every preference, down to the last, had been fulfilled. It would be a very, very high-risk strategy without a solid (ie, independent) Plan B.

DD is going to write indie exams,so there is a plan B, but what happens if plan B fails or does that never happen at independent schools? do most people who write do get offered a place?

daveg is right about the fact that you could be offered a school anywhere in the LA area - not necessarily your local one.

re the indies - it totally depends on the indie... some are really quite selective and others take nearly everyone who applies (mind you have known some "catch all" indies turn people down - only to come back later and offer them places  )

Which ones are you applying to/

The Abbey is selective but will take account of school reports, interview etc even if the exam doesn't go that well

Daddy123, you might want to look at school like Kings College Wimbledon, City of London, St Paul's, Westminster, St James,' Latymer. They are all highly regarded. It depends how academic your DS is.
