Is WGHS too far from walsall
Have put it first but bit nervous about distance
It's 12 miles away

It's the journey not the distance that matters. How easy is it and how long does it take. For example it is quicker for us to get from South birmingham to BV on the train than to kea on the green bus even though BV is much further.

So is that a journey of about 45 mins? I would say that is doable but much more is not. It also depends on how much they want to go to the school. If they are not keen and want somewhere closer to home then you might get a long of whinging especially through the dark winter months.

Dd wants to go there
I'm bit nervous she won't make friends
Think I'm just nervous that she's going to secondary school full stop

It is nerve wrackng but it will be fine. Ds1 went to KEFW with a number of primary school friends but was on his own in his form. A year on and his closest friends are all new friends and they are a lovely bunch. My Ds has actually enjoyed making a fresh start.

Suppose and she has said she welcomes the chance to meet new people

Now that you have gone past the 31st October 2014 you can no longer be nervous about your number one choice and your answer now has to be no, it is not too far.Any negatives from your mind have to be removed with only positives as those will be the vibes you will give to your dd.Your choice if it remained the same is now set in concrete.

My Dd has just started wghs and she loves it. She was a quiet girl in primary and I am amazed how well she is getting on and how many new friends she has made. On some lunch times they ran a kind of friendship club where they get chance to have fun and meet other yr 7s and they also held an evening where parents of girls in the same form got to meet.
Once lists are confirmed they hold a meeting around march i think and at the end they split people up into different rooms depending on which area you live so you can meet other parents and maybe arrange travel.
I'm not from Walsall but it takes dd about 35 there but sometimes nearly hour back as some buses outside school are too full, but they are every 7 min.

My overriding impression of the school from its open days was its caring environment.
I think from the schools calendar the meeting for new year 7 parents is the 22nd April 2015 at 6.00 pm in the school hall the one in March 2015 talks about year 7 parents which maybe your parents evening. The induction days for new girls are the 2nd and 3rd July 2015.
