The local LEA's have catchment as part of the school allocation process and protocol. However, from a legal point of view is it Legal, can a well paid lawey argue that the law is broken when catchment is applied. I read somewhere that it had been challenged and cases being won.

Most people don't challenge the LEA believeing that they don't have a case.

Some catchments are legal; some catchments are not. I have the impression that the Schools Adjudicators like catchments in principle but if they don't like the way a specific catchment scheme is being operated they'll overrule it.

From a quick glance at how Solihull places have been offered in the last couple of years I doubt the adjudicator would find any serious issues with their approach as long as they adjust the boundaries when they need to.
