Um, it is probably because if one has applied for an AP, it's unlikely they would make an offer on Full Fees? Not sure, this is the impression I got from DS teacher.

You're probably right about interviews until Feb 10th because Mrs Phillips from KES did say they would be interviewing for 3 weeks. I don't understand why they would write that they are interviewing until Feb 3rd though?

Oh well, we can wait and hope.

Don't give hope yet Reeyah, if a place at KES is really what you want. If your DS did well enough to pass they would not penalise him because he applied for an AP. If they run out of funds but he did well enough, they offer a full fee standard place - sometimes parents can still find other means

KES will offer a full fee place to any boy who does well enough in the test, even if he applied for an AP but isn't high enough up the list to get one. Until about 5 or 6 years ago their top income limit for any bursary funding was about £40K, so they know people earning way below their upper limit will often stretch themselves to pay the full fees if they want it enough.

Thank you UmSusu and Camphillian :-).

I had no idea that the upper limit was £40k up until a few years ago!

Longer than that. In 2007 the scheme topped out at £67k (£77k if more than one child).

No doubt basics such as food and fuel were far cheaper in '07. Maybe the limit has been moved upwards to take into account rising living costs.
However I do believe that the £2K reduction for each additional (other than the applicant) child, does not take into account the reality of caring for a large family.

I know that large families (and their 'feckless' parents) have had a lot of bad press recently so I won't labour the point, but as my children grow I do in all honesty wonder how we will manage in a few years' time.
With food costs rocketing, 7 people to feed (5 of them male - and my 13 and 11 year olds, whilst remaining pretty slim, eat far more than me!), we will also be needing 7 mobile phone contracts, 5 child/student bus/train/green bus passes, and, instead of a desk with a PC in the front room, a full ICT suite to avoid the current queues into the late night just to do homework, a specialised internet connection and at least 2 printers. I wash 3 loads a day in my 8kg washing machine and 2-3 dishwasher loads too. 7 people need hot showers and endless pairs of shoes, clothes, coats, bags and stationery supplies. I haven't mentioned University fees and living costs....
When I mentioned this at KES, (OK, ds2 went for interview) it was implied that I could work full time instead of part-time, but quite who would then hold this family together when my husband works 65+ hours a week and the youngest is still 2, I do not know.

I suppose any AP system will have its flaws, and telling who is really 'deserving' is difficult, but they could consider whether, due to the rapidly rising cost of basic utilities and food, discounting £2K for each 'additional' child is really a fair amount.

PS Forgot to mention losing child benefit next January too

Oh Um, that sounds exhausting
Please tell me that you are sensible and use a tumble dryer for all that washing otherwise you would either spend all day hanging the wretched stuff out or would live in a maze of clothes airers next to radiators.
I wanted to say 'live in a chinese laundry' but decided not to after the tigers mothers thread 8)
Soooo cold here at home, I can hardly type.

There is something I don't understand... In the paper about the Scale of Fees payable for KES, a person with a relevant income of 40,000 would only pay £ 2,274 and it is only people having a relevant income at or above 73,000 who would have to pay full fees.
Could you shade some light on this matter, please?

On the other hand, I hear of pepole who do not pay a penny for this wonderful education, cumulating AP + scholarship... How is this possible?
reeyah wrote: I have lost hope now, I very much doubt we will hear from KES. Our DS also has special needs and we also applied for an AP. His teacher has already said, if we don't get called for interview, it's bad news :-(.
Don't loose hope, reeyah. As um explained, most of the children who get a place there are not called for an interview. I mean, not beeing called for an interiew is bad news for an AP, but your DS might have done well enough for a place at KES!

im so proud of him regardless of the outcome :)
Congrats, claireabel and good luck for the interview!

UmSussu,

Have you got any feedback from the teacher about sending the letter? I realised I too should check with my DS's teacher and yesterday he found out that she did sent out 3 letters to 3 different schools which means 6 letters in all for my twins:roll: Well, apart from Solihul for a full pay seat and that too only for 1ds, we haven't heard anything till now - Warwick is due this week so. As we did sent out the AP forms to all indies but I guess we didn't qualify looking at how other's applications were treated.

And Congratulations Um as I see your DS2 got an interview call so atleast you are assured of a place in KES!! Good job! :D
