Kusa,

The following information was posted on the forum previously, but I can not find the original post and the year it was posted:

PAN: 96
Applicants: 844
Rank of the last applicant offered a place: 201

From the above, the pass mark for the last applicant can be calculated as 110.4

Hi vza
Does that mean 105 applicants turned down QM - which meant the applicant ranked 201 could get in?
Also how did you get a sd score of 110.4 from the given info?

Parents don't necessarily 'turn down' QM, but they will often have another Grammar (closer to them, usually) as a higher priority, to which they also gained the 'entry' score.
Therefore they will be offered the other Grammar.

This reflects the geographical location of QM (not as easily accessible to as many people, as, say CH) rather than the quality of the school, which is excellent.

We did this ourself - twice.
Although my sons took the QM exam, we admittedly live too far to make travelling there by public transport feasible, so I placed 5 other Grammar schools before QM - and my sons were offered a place at a higher-choice school on our list.

No, it does not mean 105 turned down QM. What it means is that 105 applicants expressed other schools as a higher preference and there were offered places at those schools by the council. As a result, candidate ranked 201 was the last offer (96 QM + 105 other schools). Rank orders over PAN for successful candidates are quite common among Grammar Schools and some typical numbers posted on the forum for 2011 are:

KE CH - Boys: PAN 93, APPLICANTS 1205, RANK OF LAST OFFER 145 (56 % over PAN)
KE Aston - Boys: PAN 104, APPLICANTS 1429, RANK OF LAST OFFER 414 (298 % over PAN)
KE Five Ways: PAN 150, APPLICANTS 1854, RANK OF LAST OFFER 362 (141 % over PAN)
KE Bishop Vesey : PAN 124, APPLICANTS 1142, RANK OF LAST OFFER 389 (212% over PAN)
Queen Mary's - Boys: PAN 96, APPLICANTS 844, RANK OF LAST OFFER 201 (109% over PAN)

SD score (pass mark) was calculated from the info (201/844) and normally calculations are fairly accurate in estimating the pass mark.

Great posts um & vza.
Just out of interest vza (& I hope I'm not tiring you with these Maths) but do you have any Rank orders over PAN for the girls' schools?
Regards

Unfortunately, I do not but I expect it to be very similar to QM for boys.
