This is my first time applying to schools and I'd appreciate some help.

My daughter scored 316 for Walsall and 215 in the Consortium, both borderline cut-off scores.

Our choice is KE Handsworth, QMHS and then Sutton GS in that order. My question is if she misses out on the first two will she get Sutton (assuming her score is high enough) ?

Should we list by preference or by which she is most likely to get into??? very confusing.

I will also list local comps after the GS.

Yes, list them in your preference order.

If she does not gain entry to choices 1, or 2, or 3, she will still be treated equally with all others as applicant for school 4, and so on...

It's our first time applying for secondary too so it's all a bit duanting.

I am putting our choices in order of which school my son liked best. As I understand it, when allocating, the local authority move down your list until you meet requirements for that choice. Schools don't know where you have ranked them on your form. Just make sure you have your catchment school on the list, even if it's last.

What happens if she does not get into school 1 or 2 on allocation day and we elect to join a waiting list, does she then lose the right to schools further down the list?

You will be allocated a school from further down your preferences, and will also be placed on the waiting list, if I am not wrong you can be put on as many waiting lists as you want (or qualify for)

No you won't.

I'll settle for any GS with her border-line scores! We'd prefer the nearest one but not at the risk of losing out to any GS.

It is our first time too.

But there just isn't enough adrenaline in the system for exam day, results day, offer day, waiting list offers and it goes on. If you are aiming for two different areas, it all doubles up.
