This is probably a a very silly question, but it's our first time through the procedure so we don't know!

The offers that have just been issued have to be accepted or declined in the next week or so. We have an offer for our second choice, which is great, but if we were offered our first choice from the waiting list we would take it. Such an offer might not come until much later in the summer though.

Are we right in assuming that if we accept the second-choice place we have been offered now, that does not jeopardise our place in the waiting list for our first-choice school? I can't imagine you would have to decline a definitie offer from one GS, in the hopes of only maybe getting a waiting-list place at another. That would seem terribly risky!

you are advised to accept the offer you have been given today and then go on the waiting list for the other school

You will be automatically placed on the waiting list for your higher preference schools.
Accepting your 2nd/3rd/4th etc choice does not remove you from these lists.

Thanks Um (and Herman).

A 4th choice would have been a fine thing. We come under Worcestershire and can only nominate a total of 3 schools for year-7 entry!

A very important point for those living in Worcs with only 3 choices (2 in practice because you have to include your local catchment school as 3 choice)

If you find you were unable to include another KE School that you would have qualified for but couldn't include because of Worcs stupid rules, then you could speak to the KE Foundation and ask for advice regarding changing your CAF order - this has been successfully done before - there are precedents.

If they agree then you would need to speak to Worcs LEA and request CAF order change - they will agree if pushed. KE Foundation has told Worcs on many occasions that a choice of only 3 in unfair.

In this situation you wouldn't get an automatic slot but you would be put at the top of the waiting list

We live in Staffordshire as you might guess. Staffs also only provides a CAF with three choices however they will add further preferences if you choose to submit them by letter or email. We included 9 schools on our preference list this year because most good schools are outside our area.

Staffordshire give the impression you are limited but if you read carefully they don't actually say that in their documents. This may be helpful information for some people in future.
