Birmingham Grammars should be only for Birmingham children

I had a strong discussion regarding this today with some civic members of the society .
Since the Birmingham grammars were originally set up for under privileged children in the town and even today they are funded by Birmingham LA which means residents of Birmingham pay for these schools by paying council tax while most of the places in these schools are taken by the children living outskirts and from more affluential councils who has no contribution to Birmingham LA..
Is this fair ?
What about the child who lives in Birmingham ?
State schools are not so great and chances of him getting into his local grammar are very slim because they are taken by some one who comes under Warwickshire or Solihull council and has done his primary from prep school ..
If they love our grammar ( mind it they don't like certain area and pupil here) so much why don't ask their council to develop their local school to grammar's standard..

I hope authorities will sort this problem nearer in future!!

But the comp schools can be made to the grammar standard
But again I guess whole debate of comp school will come again where parents have access to an excellent comp school still they wil go for grammar ...

But Pp do you agree with me or no that Birmingham grammars should be for Birmingham children as its part Birmingham LA?

I think you may find that the vast majority of funding for schools comes from central government and not from locally raised funds.

Are you sure about this? I was under the impression they are not wholly funded by the LEA?

Need to read and understand rather quote. That is not a new grammar it is in effect an expansion of places at the existing grammar. This happened in Birmingham last year.

No I don't agree that grammar should be restricted to Birmingham people. There are non where I live so this would rule out this option for many hundreds of thousands. The king Edwards provide a way of increasing diversity and integration, restricting would I believe lead to less diversity across the board

Who are Birmingham children?

Those born in Birmingham? Those who go to school in Birmingham?Do their parents need to live in Birmingham? What about all those people who work in Birmingham, have businesses in the city do there children qualify? After all they and their businesses are contributing through local and national taxation to the city.

I think we should restrict access to "Birmingham" airport to those who suffer the most from its use to the residents of Solihull after all its really Solihull airport. When it wanted permission to expand permission had to be sought from Solihull council. But the airport has a Birmingham postal code B26 3QJ so are we talking about children who live in the postal district of Birmingham?

This really isn't a logical or rational argument.Lets just look at healthcare maybe we should restrict access to certain hospitals to the residents of the local authority in which the hospital is located. In relation to really specialised heart services for adults the two main centres in the Midlands are the QE2 in Birmingham and the Wolverhampton Heart and Lung Centre at the New Cross hospital in Wednesfield and both have patients from across the country and from neighbouring countries like Wales. What about really specialist cancer care some Birmingham patients travel to the Christie hospital in Manchester.Apart from increasing the mortality rates with such a policy would it be fair and just to have such a policy.
