Scoring clusters

I know some people have mathmatical equations for showing how the scoring works on a curve.

Pp I think used an analogy of people of different heights standing on a line. As you got to the middle (average) there are more people, as you move away either side towards smaller and bigger the numbers thin out.

I have some figures for you, but only a small selection, but this shows how this works

3 years ago my DS secured a place at FW with a score of 237. I asked the FO for a list of all the scores offered. They duly obliged and I was given a list of 166 scores.

I am unable to copy and paste at the moment. I was interested to see where my DS score fitted in.

Lowest score was 226 and highest was 283.

Based on my DS score of 237 I worked out the following

73 children out of 166 scored 237 or more, with 12 children on 237

93 children 226 to 236 - each point is roughly equivalent to 10 places

73 children 237-283 - each point is roughly equivalent to 1.5 places

I know this is a very small amount to work with when comparing to 5300 children who sat the exam, but does make interesting reading.

I wonder if the FO would ever issue a list of all 5300 scores as this would be very interesting to see the score clusters

Here's a guesstimate of how I think those 93 and 73 might look in reality after the algorithm and allocations merry go round had done it's thing. It is worth noting that the lowest score would only have one place offered at this was the cut off, hence 226=1 only. The rest of the distribution does not necessarily follow a St Dev curve because preferences randomise that to an extent.

I think the total scores won't follow a SD curve because they are the sum of 2 papers and individual papers will have a greater or lesser emphasis on Numercial/Non Verbal. viz. each individual paper will follow the SD.

Some children (my DS for example many years ago) score highly in Numerical but relatively poorly in Verbal. The fairly recent change to standardising the individual papers rather than the separate VR, NVR and Numerical sections has smoothed the results to some degree but you will still find significant variations between papers. So, for example, the 283 score (which was probably the highest that year) could be the result of say a 150 added to a 133. (incidentally I would predict that, a high scoring paper probably came from a child with an extraordinary and rapid word vocabulary scoring very highly on Synonyms/Antonyms section).

As an aside, I have been campaigning for some time for the KE FO Office to provide a far greater analysis of the results, standardisation methodology and even which sections children found the most difficult on their web site. I think this would help vastly to demystify the B/Ham 11+ exam for a lot of parents. Maybe some additional Q&A sections to their web site would help. I may give someone a call in the FO office!

Ken R figures show 225 as the last entry for FW for 2012, so presume that there should be a additional entry of 225=1 on that list.

I do find it interesting that the numbers of entries above a level, fall off a cliff after with just 19% of entrants to the school scoring above 242.

One Birmingham tutor who I will not quote claims on their website that 17% of their 2014 cohort scored above this level which would seem consistent.

In terms of this year they claim 48% of this year's cohort scored above 242. 27% scoring above 250

I do hope this marketing hyperbole, or if true it is a worrying trend for the increasing success of the tutor industry

I think these were he scores on offers day.

One of DS friend's scored 226 and was on the waiting list. I think he got offered a place in the may.
