Can anyone tell me what format the exams are for Sutton Girls? I can't even get through to the Admissions office, never mind get an answer from them.

Thanks

It's exactly the same as the Bishop Vesey exam - see Bishop Vesey Thread

Quote:
Entrance Examination

The entrance examination consists of three separate papers. These have been designed to identify the most able candidates and are likely to be very difficult for children of average or below average ability. The three papers are:

Verbal Reasoning: This paper will test pupils' ability to reason and will be of 30 minutes duration, with a practice test of 10 minutes.

Non-Verbal Reasoning: This paper tests the ability of pupils to reason with shapes and symbols, and will be of 35 minutes duration, including some time for practice.

Mathematics: This paper emphasises problem solving skills applying mathematical knowledge appropriate for key stage 2 of the National Curriculum and will be of 50 minutes duration. There is no practice paper.

Each of the questions will have an equal weight and will be standardised to account for age differences in candidates.

The tests are considered to be valid, reliable and fair. It is recognised that parents may wish to help their children. However, it is believed that excessive practice and coaching should be discouraged because it is counter productive. The tests are in the Standard, and not the Multi Choice format.

Thanks, but I meant are they multiple choice or standard format? I called the school after still not managing to get through to the LEA, and they said it is usually multiple choice but they can't be sure. I spoke to a secretary and she wasn't sure about the maths paper, but thought the VR and NVR were both usually multiple choice. We've had a go at both to practice, but as my daughter hasn't been tutored, I wanted to try to get a bit more info.

I was also told by a teacher on open day that VR & NVR are multiple choice but LEA have sent info stating that it would be standard...confused!!???

It would be nice if the LEA and Bishop vesey make up their minds on which format they want to use. Any ideas from tutors or anyone else who are in the know would be appreciated.

Just spoken with Birmingham LEA. Word is that Maths is standard, Non-verbal is Multiple choice on same paper i.e you will circle an answer. Verbal is also multiple choice - answered in the same booklet - NOT separate answer sheet. Hope this is of some help.
