Interesting to hear that Brighton have effectively abolished catchment areas- popular schools will now have places allocated by a lottery!

Can't see it happening nationally, apparently schools in Brighton are not evenly distributed and also they have a left-wing council.

Also, the council committee vote was apparently rigged and legal challenges will follow.

Any thoughts on its national relevance?

Well it shouldn't have much relevance for a fully two-tier system like Bucks.

Oddly, I havent' seen mention of siblings in Brighton. If they don't get preference before raffling the remaining places, you could end up with all your children in different schools.

Also, it seems contrary to the governmetn's aims of almost all schools being specialist. What if your child has a flair for sport but hates languages but gets a place at language college rather than a sport one?

Even with our grammar system, you've got a reasonable chance of having your children split between no more than 2 schools (grammar and community).

Are there any exceptions?

If your child has SEN or already has a sibling at that school you will have overall priority for a place.

Brighton says under the code pupils who have brothers or sisters at the school they are trying to get into, or have special educational needs still have overall priority regardless of where they live.
