I find the assumption that only tutored children qualify for GS places quite offensive.

Offensive possibly; but still largely true, sadly.

This list of the top 100 schools is one of many lists of top 100 schools, not all of which have schools in the same order. This one is based on GCSE results. The A level ones often tell a slightly different story, though it is still largely one of highly selective schools in affluent areas coming out with the highest scores. No surprises there then.

The state and independent school are ranked separately in the ST so these results posted here are just for state school rankings.

Bromley High was number 131 among independent schools. Newstead was number 17 among state schools. For a comparison of the results among the schools

Bromley High
At GCSE A*/A was 79.8%
At A level A*/A was 44.8%

Newstead
At GCSE A*/A was 79.4%
At A level A*/A was 59%

Someone also asked for the top 20 list:
Henrietta Barnett
Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet
Wilson's School
The Tiffin Girls School, Kingston upon Thames
St Olave's Grammar School, Orpington
Pate's Grammar School, Cheltenham
The Latymer School, London
Colchester Royal Grammar School
Altrincham Grammar School for Girls
Tiffin School
Kendrick School
King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys
King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls
Lumen Christi College
The Judd School
Dr Challoner's High School
Newstead Wood School for Girls
Reading School
Nonsuch High School for Girls
Sutton Grammar School for Boys

Thank you sherry_d. I need to see if I can buy a copy of ST without having to subscribe. I remember you could do a one off serach and pay for just that, rather than subscribing and then having to remember to cancel.

Thanks for the Sunday Times top 20. I accidentally landed on http://rankings.ft.com/secondary-school ... hools-2011" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

1. QE Barnet
2. Colchester Royal GS
3. King Edward VI
4. Henrietta Barnett School
5. St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School
6. Reading School
7. Tiffin Girls' School
8. Kendrick School
9. Colyton Grammar School
10. Tiffin School Boys
11. Pate's Grammar School
12. Wilson's School
13. The Latymer School
14. Dr Challoner's Grammar School
15. Altrincham Grammar School for Girls
17. Newstead Wood School for Girls
18. Judd School
19. King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls
20. Watford Grammar School for Boys

FT publish results in February so while its 2011 ranking its 2010 results. They also use a different methodology basing their ranking on “core” academic subjects, as defined by the University of Cambridge. Despite the minor difference the top 20 schools are almost the same in all the lists.
