Lord Bill's 5 A* to C including En & Ma was 62% - this is BELOW some of the Upper Schools and nowhere near the 98%/99%/100% of Grammars.

It's results are NOT as good as Grammar schools and indeed they should be better!

how can lord bills be as good as a grammar school you cannot compare them directly as they take all pupils not just the top 25% they have at least 15-20% registered SEN as they are seen as a specialist in the autistic spectrum so i don't think the a-c grades for the whole school are that relevant.

In order to get a fair assesment you need to compare what happens to the top 25% of the intake which roughly equates to the top sets and the a to c % for these sets is the same as the grammar schools

look at oxbridge success over the last 5 years on average 5 students have entered oxbridge which is equivalent if not better than most of the aylesbury grammar schools

It's not just me ofsted gave them outstanding in 2011:

I have a daughter there and a son at aylesbury grammar and i don't see alot of difference in the quality of teaching or academic levels if anything my daughter is being alot more supported encouraged and nurtured, she has her GCSE's this year so we shall see but she is on board for all a's and a*'s (he says hoping the jinx gods are not reading this post !)

Have been doing a little analysis of GCSE's comparing lord williams school in english(combined lit and lang so 2 gcse's) maths and science (double award) these are the subjects where setting occurs , to henry floyd grammar school which is probably the most comparable.

For the top sets % of a* at lord bills is :

maths 34%
english 56%
science 30%

and for all students at henry floyd:

science 28% (average for all sciences)
maths 20%
english 25%

So if you are in the top set for these subjects at lord bills you are roughly equally likely and maybe a little more likely to get an A* than if you are at the henry floyd grammar

i hope this is helpful for the original poster because i suspect what you need to know for your backup school is that the opportunity is there for your child to get good results

Tree I was responding to an earlier post.

Where did you get that SHF data from?

On the website it has:

2011 GCSE % A*/A
Biology 62%
Chemistry 55%
Physics 51%
Maths 64% (plus a whole group of Year 9s who all got A or A*)
English Lang 51%
English Lit 56%

A bit different from your data.

G55 i was just looking at a*'s not a*/a the data was from the spreadsheet on this page:

http://www.sirhenryfloyd.bucks.sch.uk/p ... ts&pid=210" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

maths 31 a*'s out of 157
english 22 and 25 out of 157
and science 47 33 and 30 out of 143

I suppose the bottom line is if your child goes to lord williams and gets in the top set in year 10 (allowing for late developers) in the key subject of science maths and english statistcally their class will get equivalent gcse results to children at a the grammer school. Which gives some reasurance for your back up school, but i dont think can be said for some upper schools

You should really look at A/A* that would be a fairer comparison between the schools.

Yeah it's only cos I know that the vast majority of the a*s are in the top sets so it's the only way of fairly comparing just the top sets to the grammar as a whole

This discussion risks becoming a "two-way pedants' corner"!

I don't think it is of any great value to fast trak, but it's not easy to see where I might split the thread, so may I suggest that you both continue to debate the matter via PM? If you can agree an answer between you, please PM me and I will post it on this thread to close the discussion.

Thank you both.
