Re: 12+ allocation letters
that's ridiculous KT. The deadline for replying to the letter is 14 days. Rather than type out the instructions, I've scanned them and will PM you with an attachment. It gives the information for waiting lists and new preferences - you can change your preferences at this stage it says.

Hi Anotherdad
Unfortunately you can't send attachments with a PM. If you would like to email the scanned letter to me, I can forward it to KT - we have corresponded by email. Email address removed as the problem is sorted.

Re: 12+ allocation letters
thanks Sally-Anne. I have managed to get the information to KT. Not quite strapped to a pigeon's leg but not far off!
Re: 12+ allocation letters
Thank you both, information was useful
BCC still won't tell us anything, told us to wait until Friday (again) and call back.
S-A, do the actual GS have any say at all about over subscription appeals and whether a pupil should be allocated a place? I fear I know the answer, but I'd appreciate your thoughts. We are going to go for appeal (god help me!!) just to get a GS place. I really feel that the someone, somewhere has it in for us as we've been so unlucky all the way with GS

Re: 12+ allocation letters
I understand that you make an appeal for each and every GS you are interested in, not just one appeal for "a" grammar school place. Each is heard separately, with each outcome determined by the particular circumstances for that school/child combination. e.g. for one school, you might use living in catchment as a point, whereas for another school, perhaps out of catchment, you would use the point that your child was a talented musician and that the school had a specialism in performing arts.
The good thing is that the letter will give you an option to change your preferences, so you might include schools not on your original list. For example, Chesham Grammar offered to all 12+ qualifiers, meaning they may not have filled the prospective year 8's PAN.
And no, I don't believe that the schools have any involvement. Once they've submitted their PAN, it is up to BCC to determine whether they exceed it or not. In preparation for potential bad news, I had begun to collate a spreadsheet which (for my chosen schools), showed what had happened to GCSE results in the cohort years when PAN was exceeded. It demonstrated that there was no evidence that overall results suffered with the addition of an extra few children into that year. In fact, in the years where PAN was exceeded, results were marginally improved! My understanding is that when deciding, the appeal panel balance the disadvantage to the child of not being offered a place against the disadvantage to the existing cohort of extra children in a class.
Someone more experienced than me may confirm or dispute all of this I hope!

Re: 12+ allocation letters
Thanks Anotherdad, I know I have to appeal for each school.. so potentially 2 appeals do you know if the appeal panel will be different.. will use totally different arguments for each!

Hi KT
I suggest you start a thread on the Appeals section and take a read of Section C of the Appeals Q&A. anotherdad's advice is correct, but there is a risk of people posting here and advising you poorly. Over on Appeals, Etienne's and my eagle eyes will be watching out.
The panel is almost certain to be completely different for each appeal, but even if it wasn't, panel members understand that you have to make the best possible case for each school, even if that differs from appeal to the next.

Re: 12+ allocation letters
Managed to get hold of nice lady in admissions. I gave her all my details and they are sending a duplicate letter today. However, she talked me through how to get an appeal pack and a few other details on appeals I asked about...
