I was told practice test 1 and 2 are broadly speaking similar to the real thing ??
Also I was told by SD in the real thing one paper is easy-medium and the other being medium-difficult
I guess it depends on each individual child and how they feel

Yes, the practice tests are of a similar difficulty to the real papers.
No, one paper is not easier than the other, except in children's own perceptions of them. They are very evenly balanced.

And I've been told at the school gate that one paper tends to have more maths/codes than the other....is that another 11+ myth?

Yet another myth.
There are 4 types of codes and 4 number type questions.
2 codes and 2 maths will appear on one paper. The other 2 codes and 2 maths will appear in the next test.
Learn all 21 and expect all 21 over the 2 tests.
