Hi, does anyone know when we will hear if our child will be allowed to sit the 12 plus. I don't want him to start work on practise papers only to have to then tell him he wont be taking the 12 plus if county refuse the application.

I'm not really sure about this but would guess that the decision could arrive anytime this term.

First of all the LEA has to write to your school for a report. I imagine that they look at the applications as the reports come in, starting this month.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Dear Guest

Start papers regardless....bucks take their time to tell you if report successful.

If not successful.....appeal....many are rejected at the report stage because an 'administrator' has a checklist and if 'not good enough' child cant take test. Many get through on appeal [ higher percentage than 11 appeals - over to Etienne]

Do you know the 'types' of verbal reasoning needed for late transfer?

Following link may be helpful to others www.buckscc.gov.uk/schools/documents/ad ... cedure.pdf

Good Luck

Many thanks Patricia and Etienne.
I was kind of hoping we would hear soon and then start cramming but that may leave it all to late. It's a hard choice to get a child to prepare for something in hope!, because if they are turned down they may well feel a sense of failure that they were not thought good enough to test.

Dear Katie

I sympathise, and it's difficult to explain to a child the logic of what is going on.

The LEA base their decision whether or not to test on curriculum work, but the 12+ measures something quite different!!!

That's why, more often than not, panels tend to uphold appeals against refusal to test.

We seem to be meeting parents that have children that have passed their 12plus, but then are told that 14 people are on the list ahead of them waiting for a place.

If 50 children pass the 12plus and there are only 10 places free, how do they allocate?

Is the pass mark important?

Parents apply for the school they want, and if there are vacancies the published admission criteria are applied to determine who gets in. The final criterion used to be score but is now distance.

Parents who fail to get a place can ask for a transfer appeal - see my post on page 3 of the "Appeals" thread.

Dear All

The 12/13+ [ The late transfer test ] consists of 1 verbal reasoning paper....85 questions, 45 minutes, multiple choice, similar standard to the 11 plus [ hence 5 more questions, 5 minutes less ]

As it is only one paper, cannot cover the full compliment of 21 types for Bucks exams. Therefore teach all 21.....

1] start with IPS additional questions
2] IPs 30 minute tests
3] Mike edwards [ bank of 6 marked a,b,c,d,e,f] found on this website
4] Susan Daughtrey - Bright sparks series [ NOT her books 1-7 just dont get me started on that one ]
5] Nfer [ must practice types HIKNOS from IPS while doing shop bought NFER [ because they are not included]

The 50 minute tests only have 80 questions so reduce the time allowed to complete the test to 42 minutes

There is an additional type that is covered ......a bank of maths worded problems eg add up the postion numbers of the vowels.....make some up.

For daily practice could use IPs or AFN [ 8 tests.....perhaps 5 a day....AFN are easier than the other publishers]

Must keep up reading out loud...Vocab still a big problem [ make up flash cards...word on front, oppsite and similar word on reverse....play games]

Practice mental maths in the car, out and about....just get quick at the basic 4 operations.

Hope this helps towards this years late transfer taken in April.....

Patricia

Dear All

Re Mike Edwards papers on this site......1B, 2B, 3B,4B, 5B, 6B...not 1/6abcdef.....sorry.

Also have just bought AE Tiution Book 2 ....excellent for the maths questions found on the Bucks 11 plus and late transfer. Need to check out Book 1 for alpha/word patterns/vocab type questions. Just about to ring up this 'wonderful' website to buy book 1....will keep you posted.
