Too soon to start preparations?

Hi, I am new to the website and forum.
My son will be in Year 5 this coming September and wonder if it is too early to start preparing for the 11+? He would take the exam in October 2014 and are hoping for Colyton Grammar as we live less than 30 minutes drive from there.
My son's school, from my understanding, do not encourage many pupils to take the test but they have said that my son would be capable of doing well (and has the potential to attend and do well at Colyton Grammar) since he was in Year 1!
Now we are getting much closer I am looking for as much info as I can lay my hands on (how I came across this website and forum).
Anyway, my son is considered to be bright and is on the Gifted and Talented Plan at school BUT he is very reluctant and hesitant about schooling. The main issue is that he doesn't want to be considered a geek by his friends (his words, not mine). He, therefore, made the decision when starting Year 3 to "dumb himself down". Whilst this has been evident in his work and attitude/concentration levels at school he remains top learner in his year. This makes me wonder what he could achieve if he applied himself fully. With his reluctance should I start the preparations now? I have discussed the 11+ with him. Having offered a monetary incentive he is more than happy to try some practice papers on condition that I do not mention it to his friends or his school.
Any advice would be most appreciated.
