Late Applications for Southend schools

Post by RDR »

I have seen a couple of references to late waiting list applications to the Southend schools -- how does this work?

Some people apply to the Southend schools after they have received their results of the 11+. When they have not scored enough to obtain a place in Chelmsford. They are then placed on the waiting list in the position of their score, which moves other people on the list further down.

This is a loophole that has received many complaints, it may, hopefully, disappear.

Yes this is a loop-hole but perfectly legitimate and one we used to get our DS a place at WHSB. If you are in Essex you only get 4 choices but they get more in Southend and some of the London Boroughs. We wanted to put KEGS, CRGS, WHSB an out of area Comp and our best more local comp. We knew that Southend would accept late applications though so, put two superselectives down then two comps. When we got the results we saw that while our son had done well enough to comfortably get into WHSB he had not secured a place at a super-selective. We called Southend who added him to the list - he went in at 3rd so at least 2 parents in a similar situation had done the same - and by 1st April was in.

People moan and groan every year but the truth is that they can only complain if their DC has not got a high enough score in the first place. That is, it is few disappointed parents of children on the waiting list who are upset. Ultimately the system is transparent and an open competition. As long as you keep to the rules go for it.

In the interest of sensitivity the reason people are upset it that it is very disheartening to watch your position on a waiting list move downwards.

The system is unfair. Southend residents are allowed 5 choices, East London Boroughs are allowed 6 choices and Essex residents are only allowed 4.

The 4 Essex grammars only allow late applications to be made under appeal - it is still possible to apply to these schools at appeal stage when they were not on the CAF/SAF.

If you live over the border in Suffolk you only get three choices! so yes the system is very unfair.

yes we get 6 choices, but having been to open days at 5 (all within 1.5 mile radius) of the local comps who categorically said my DD would not pass their selection criterion which leaves me with only one catchment school, the poorest one.

so what choice ?
only thing left is to go for a GS
