still feeling down about yeterday's results and grasping on to straws. I know from previous years there is also some movement. Can anyone enlighten me as to how places are allocated if spaces become available? Is it simply a case of the next one down on the list gets offered the place or is there a magic score the grammers simply won't go under. Thanks, would welcome any comments. Does anyone know if SHSB has a waiting list?

Hi, If it helps, under the old system, a school like Chelmsford County High used to have a cut-off of around 460. That is to say, of the 4400 children, boys and girls, who sat the 11+ throughout Essex, the last girl to be offered one of the 120 places came 460th out of the 4400 in the order of merit. Of course not all the children accept places because many of them decide to accept places at the Public/Independent Schools. In the second phase of offerings, which take place in June, the cut-off used to move out to about 580 for Chelmsford County High. That meant that roughly 15-20 of the 120 girls originally offered a place, turned it down and these 20 or so places were re-allocated in the June.

In short, there will be a waiting list. The letter you receive from the Consortium next week will tell you where your son came in the order of merit at SHSB, for instance 164/621 at SHSB, meaning 20 short of getting a place)

My best advice to you, is that if he is close, parents tend to ring the Consortium once a week, up to June, and you will be given an update of where your sons latest position on the waiting list is, as places are gradually re-allocated, following rejectiion of places by parents.

Thank you guest. Is it a case of asking to be on the waiting list or is it automatic? If it is not automatic do you ask the LEA for a waiting list place or the CSSE? I know I can find all of this out on Monday but if you know it will help. Many thanks again.

You will automatically be on the waiting list of any schools that were higher in your choice that the one your child was offered. Last year, out of the 120 girls offered a place at Chelmsford, 6 turned them down. The results you will receive nest week, will give you your childs score compared to all other children applying for that school. You will be told where your child came in each of the schools you applied for. i.e. If you applied for Chelmsford it may say 160/600, your child came 160 out of 600. Last year the cut of for Chelmsford was 150 something, after all the reshuffles. So don't loose heart, wait until the results come out and your child may be just out of the cut off and may be offered a place after the reshuffles.

I already know one girl who has been offered a place a Chelmsford, but is not going to take it!
