I love Kangaroo Maths - of course the APP foci are not the whole of level 6 - it will take all of Year 7 to teach the rest of level 5 and 6 in a GS.

Dear Guest55,

I was wondering how the 11+ maths papers compare to level 5 in the national curriculum? In the run up to the 11+ I was concerned that my son wouldn't have covered everything in school.

No idea - I don't teach in Essex and haven't seen an 11+ Maths paper since I was at school myself

The papers are based on level 5 material, but incorporate areas from higher up the curriculum without requiring specific knowledge. I'll edit later with relevant examples relating to levels.

thanks

My son had no 11+ tutoring (either at school or independently), but did very well on his 11+ maths paper. While there was no help with the 11+, he has been doing extra maths in a group of more able children since year 5. They are clearly covering a very broad curriculum, and not just cramming them for the level 6 paper.

Interesting that this thread seems mostly to be about Maths. Is that because it's much more likely for a child to be ahead in Maths than in English?

I think that plenty of able primary school children are easily capable of a level 6 in English. I think the problem that guest55 has with maths is that it requires specific subject knowledge.

I'm not sure about that. The level 6 literacy paper I saw seems to demand a level of maturity and literary analysis that would be very rare indeed in a 10\11 year old.

I think a level 6 writing is more likely than a 'real' level 6 maths because there is so much content to teach in maths.
