Sorry to ask but if my DS has a score of 311.433, do you think he has a chance of getting into westcliff or southend?

Hi,

Someone just posted this on the other one, this probably will give you some kind of an idea. Wish you all the best for your DS.

Your child’s raw scores in the three tests are as follows:
English Score 26/50
Mathematics score 26/40
Verbal Reasoning Score 58/80
These three results are adjusted to take account of any variations in the difficulty of different papers each year and combined to produce your child's overall, standardised, weighted score of: 329.166

This score is used to determine your childs place on each of the "offer lists" of your chosen school. The CSSE Office has supplied the relevant Local Authority with the position of your child on each of the offer lists of the schools for which you expressed a preference. This information is shown in the table below and we also include the total number of selective applicants for each of your chosen schools.
****************************************
King Edward VI Grammar School
Total Applicants: 851
Your Ranked Position: 347
Applicants on your ranked list: 851
****************************************

****************************************
Westcliff High School for Boys *
Total Applicants: 906
Your Ranked Position: 199
Applicants on your ranked list: 572
****************************************

Offered and delighted with second choice Westcliff out of catchment. Interested to see what cut off score was - think our DS must have been truly on the cusp! Phew!
Good luck and all the best to everyone.

My two cents is that it is unlikely that a score of 311.433 will get a place at either school. Wwe do know so far is that:

score of 329.166 ranked 199/572 was offered a place at WHSB
score of 325.992 ranked 218/572 was not offered a place at WHSB

Cut-off for out of placement WHSB is between 199 and 217. You did not mention your DS rank, but with a score of 311, I expect the rank to be below 260. Worst case is that the cut-off was rank 200 so take your rank and subtract 200 tells you how many boys may be ahead of you in the waiting list. On the plus side, many candidates will list both Southend schools and may have other schools also listed so the queue is not quite as long.

For SHSB, the scores are slightly lower since we know that the person ranked 218/572 above was offered a place at SHSB. Incidentally, that score ranked 144 out of 403, so if you assume the worst case and that was the cut-off, then if you subtract your DS SHSB rank from 144 will give you the maximum number of boys in front of your DS.

Best thing to do is to call Southend Borough/CSSE to find out where you are in the waiting list.

Hope you are successful, Colchester Dad, and at least worth the call, but suspect aang is right. I have seen your posts and realise you must be feeling very distressed by the situation. But remember Westcliff and Southend are a long trip for your DS, unless you move, and that what counts most in the DC's life chances is a supportive parent - which you clearly are. Your DC is bright and will succeed.

Thanks for all the replies. We have decided to send our son to the comprehensive that he was allocated on the 1st. Thankfully it is a really good school and although we were not in catchment - catchment school is terrible! he secured a place to make him and us very happy.
In the end even if he could secure a place at one of the southend schools the journey would be too far for him to participate fully in school life.
I know that with predicted level 6 SATS he will do very well there and we are very proud of him!

Good luck to your DC! It sounds as though he is very capable and I am sure he will shine at his new school.

Could anyone tell me if my DC's scores would've gained a place at Westcliff/Southend had we listed them as our choices? Didn't get into pref GS, listed comp as 2nd choice and offered.

Trawling through this forum for the last few days has left me confused and frustrated. My DC thinks they completely 'failed' the exam having worked so hard for 2 years. No tutor, ind. school did not teach VR at all and insisted no private tutor needed. Only a handful gained places at GSs and they were all privately tutored since year 4, quite heavily in those cases. Consistently scoring 85%/90% on practise VR bond papers, my DC did very poorly on the VR paper :(

E - 30
M - 26
VR - 45 :(

316.644

I'd just like to put her mind at rest that she didn't totally 'fail' the 11+ :?

That looks like a borderline score for SHSG out of catchment list. She may get a place on the waiting list. Are you happy with the comp?

Had she been educated within the borough of Southend this score would have been a very good pass. It is a long way above 303! Congratulate her on her "success".

Thank you 'moved' feels much happier with that! :D And yes very happy with comp :) Was also just reading this interesting thread on 'scores 2012':

Ranked 223 for Colchester- is there any hope???!!!

Response:
112 places, so you need 111 people above you to take a higher preference or go to an independent. Given that most of the 120 that go to Chelmsford will have Colchester second choice, I wouldn't give up. DD has a place at ChCHS at 152 on the list, she was 77 on the Col list so one down 110 to go.

As there is less than 1 point between our score and the DD above, which possibly equates to about 8/10 places :?: , in which case we could be ranked 230ish for Colchester and the advice given could also apply to us?? Lots of if's and but's here but it could actually make a big difference to the final rankings - is this the case??

Just trying to gage an overall realistic view of what we could've been offered. We had listed Westcliff as 3rd choice and was given a ranking of 298/632. Again we thought this would be way off ever gaining a place (especially as it was our 3rd choice anyway) but if 1st and 2nd choice places taken up and taking into account indie offers, could we move up the rankings for Westcliff?
