I've asked DD2 what went on so that we can help - she doesn't remember everything but I think the relevant stuff is here
She sat the CSSE exam at Colchester County High School last September (2012) and please bear in mind that things may be subject to change, or may run differently at the various exam centres.
After parents left the girls at the school, they were given a colour-coded badge - she can't remember whether she wrote the name or it was already on it.
The group-leaders of each colour took them to a room to play games and relax.
The girls lined up in alpha order to go to the toilet, after which they went to the hall or gym, depending on where they were going to sit the exams.
The girls entered the exam hall and had to find the table with their name and candidate number on it: they sat down.
All unnecessary items were placed under the table ie snack bag etc.
The invigilator welcomed the candidates and explained the rules ie no talking etc. The English exam paper was distributed during this speech.
The children were given time to complete their details on the front of the exam paper.
When this was all done, she said "You may begin".
The start and finish times were written on two boards.
Time warnings were given at half-way, 5 minutes and 1 minute.
The same routine was followed for maths, without the rules being stated.
Time warnings were given at half-way, 5 minutes and 1 minute.
At the end of the maths, the papers were collected and colour-by-colour, students left the exam hall to go to the dining hall.
They could go to toilet, have a drink, snack or any combination of those for 20 minutes.
She doesn't remember whether they had to get in alpha-order to go back into the exam hall.
Once seated again, each candidate found that a sheet of lined paper, a pre-used eraser and one or two pencils had already been placed on their desk.
The exam papers were distributed.
The invigilator explained that the primary/current school number was pre-entered on the VR answer sheet - DD doesn't remember for sure whether her name was on it but suspects it was, if the school number was there.
The children were told to write quickly and carefully and were wished "good luck" .
The timings were written on the two boards after the children were told that they could begin.
Time warnings were given at half-way, 20 minutes, 5 minutes and 1 minutes.
Papers were collected and then the children returned to the dining hall, ready to be collected by their parents.
Please be aware that this won't be set in stone and things may be slightly different, especially with regard to time-warnings.
