Could some one suggest the best possible commute from Rayleigh to KEGS (King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford)

My DS (Year 7) does this commute. He goes by train and absolutely loves it. He has one other child in his year who does the same but other kids join at billericay and lots at Shenfield. There is also one other child in year 8 or 9.

The first week was daunting but after week 2, he's so independent and even organised to meet up with friends on the recent inset day, and travelled alone.

There are other options: bus x30, and a first bus but I didn't like the timings and frequency.

For the train, you can get a scholars ticket!

There is also the Regal Busways no3, but it is delightfully cross-country and if you have the option of the X30 or the train I would take either of those in preference (the relevantly-timed 3 does go to KEGS itself, rather than terminating at the bus station, though; similarly, the 'end of school day' one back to Southend starts from there, I think).

The train is very good value, though - and perfect for meeting up in town (or at any of your intermediate stations, if friends live near to one of them) for socialising at the weekend or in the holidays :D ):
