Sets in Grammars

Post by T0tleybrook »

Just wondering, do Grammar schools put their pupils in sets? Only because one is already on the spectrum of 'able' after having passed the 11+.

KEGS ...sets for maths, from memory from year 8 , but it may have been year 9. No setting for anything else.

CCHS... there is another thread on this. In my daughters time, ( left two years ago ) the only thing they set for was PE.

And Southend Girls. Also for other things, I think (I could ask DD as we are currently sitting on opposite sides of the café at 'our' leisure centre, but she is with the rest of her NPLQ course group and I would probably just be rewarded with her best eye-roll  ). DD has moved from middle to top and back again since year 8 (now year 11), the difference being between going fast but with more explanation and very fast indeed with barely time to draw breath, I am told. But she is quite good at Drama as well  .

CRGS in past years set for maths from year 8 and for MFL.

Experience of top set maths is the same - express speed for those who don't really need a teacher :)
One of mine was fine and one did better in 2nd set with a really good clear teacher. Problem was he would then perform better than most of top set so be put back 'up' until he fell behind again etc etc :)

CRGS sets games (not PE) from year 7. Maths and french higher up the school.
ColCHS sets for maths. They also have "groups" for science etc in years 10 and 11 that are mixed form but not set by ability. They seem to be determined by your option choices.
