Travel to Southend schools

Does anyone have any insider info on travel from the Brentwood/Shenfield area to Southend? Is there anyone out there with children making the journey - do they tend to use the bus or train? I seem to be worried about just about everything at the moment 
but length of school day, time spent travelling and safety/happiness of DS is proving a real sticking point and that LEA form has to be completed soon!
