I was looking at one of the Maths questions with my daughter. The question is

Gretchen pays $29.99 for a DVD on her holiday. The exchange rate is £1=$1.90. How much was DVD in pounds?

What is the best way to do this question in shortest possible time?

Thanks for the help !!

Well for a starters the exchange rate is not realistic anymore :(
and I though DVDs were cheaper in the US anyway... unless it is maybe a box set?

Personally I would just go for long division... divide 299.9 by 19

but you could be at it for a while... it's not exact... does it say how close you need to get... number of DP?

£15.78...

Hi SVE,

Thanks for the response. I agree that it is better to do it this way and not try dividing 2999 by 190. For CSSE Maths, I think it is apprxmt. 1 minute a question. Hence wanted to know, if there were faster ways of doing this. The question paper which we were looking at wanted the answer in 2 decimals.

maybe an estimate...

29.99 approx $30

1.9 approx 2 $/£

answer £15

But 2dp suggests it's got to be division...

I've never seen an Essex paper that requires long division.
