Re: strs or crypt - which had best exam results this year?
I think Crypt has suffered for the last few years with the old perception of it being"not as good as Tommies".
About 6 years ago, when the LA were proposing to close the school, their GCSE results were not that much better than the best comprehensives.Certainly now,at GCSE,their results are comparable with other grammars.
My son is sporty, but there are lots that aren't.He didn't want to be in the rugby team, aiong with quite a few others,so in year 8 they did other sports.I did agree with this approach-why force them into a sport they hated(he doesn't like contact!!),instead he had opportunity to play basketball, circuits etc.He comes into his own in the summer when cricket starts-the school excel at cricket, his year represented Gloucestershire in the National rounds of the Bunbury cup and were the only state school in the national rounds!
All boys take the 3 sciences GCSE starting in year 9,as they have science and languages specialisms. My DS is certainly stronger in the English/Languages/humanities subjects and not Science and Maths, but I have always been happy with their whole approach.I did have a concern with the maths setting this year, emailed the school and had my concerns addressed with a phone call the same day!
Any queries please feel free to ask-if you go to the open day you may have the dubious honour of being shown round by DS!!!

Thanks gm
my ds likes cricket but probably not rugby, he hasn't really done much of it before but I can't see him as the rugby type. Does not like football, he plays a bit of tennis and did gymnastics for a while but never set the world on fire. He is learning piano and seems to enjoy singing tho a bit shy and not the dramatic type. Quietish all rounder, likes reading quite alot. He is popular at his school and well behaved - seems to be pretty decent at all subjects but unlike both my DDs hasn't got one obvious one that stands out. I must say I am coming round to the Crypt and will def have a look. After my experience of the 2 girl's grammars I don't buy into the such and such a school is the best just because of exams. It is just one thing to look at. Logistically 2 schools isn't the easiest but my DDs are v. different characters and I feel the slight hassle is definitely worth it. ps organisation and communication is excellent at Ribston so far.
I started the thread because after hearing a few things comparing Tommys and Crypt I was surprised to see how good the crypt exam results were quoted on their website (plus the better website too) and it has made me realise I should go along with an open mind. Thanks for posting I enjoyed reading your thoughts on this.

Just been on the STR website and it is currently being re- designed, so well done Milla they obviously listened or possibly the teacher who posts on here has passed on our thoughts .
I am all for a redesign but can't help thinking that with prospective parents clamouring for info on these schools is this the best time to be fiddling with the website no matter how bad it was
Good school though can recommend it

Milla, Whitenight, have been trying to guess his identity for ages. Not being clued up on this names thingy DH brought my attention to the fact that there may be a chess club connection.
