and the Tommies pack arrives with indication of numbers

Post by EmeraldE »

Did any of the other schools give an indicator of how many would be sitting at their school?
Tommies reckon 260. Is this more or less than last year?

Numbers are always hard to guage - but apparantly just under 1100 sat for Pates last year (i.e. for entry in Y7 in September 2010) ...

Pates numbers are always high because it's easier to sit in Cheltenham than go to Gloucester. Don't read anything too much into the no.

nearly 530 families looked round Tommy's this year. Some of these will be Y5s and some will be for comparison purposes. And, yes, with Pate's being the only Chelt grammar, it will certainly have far more than its fair share of people sitting there rather than at Glos, where ther are FOUR. Where you take the test doesn't indicate much, but remember, each child can only go to one school. Remember last year on results day the number of people getting 4 yeses (very X Factor) skewing the overall picture. Don't start finding new things to stress about! He'll be fine!!!

I seem to remember there being 250 or 260 boys sitting the test at Tommies last year, so this year's number looks very similar indeed.

Of course, many boys who want to be considered for Tommies will actually sit the test at another venue. Last year there were 550ish in the cohort altogether. Of these, the top 40% will be given a pass mark - last year this was 220 boys with a score of 210 or above.

But what we don't know is how many of the 220 also passed at Pates, the Crypt and Marling and subsequently went to one of them instead.

Exactly. Lots of boys who "pass" will go to another GS, a private school or drop out of the running completely due to a house move. So having 220 pass for 108-120 places is not as problematic as it might seem.

I remember hearing the Head speak a couple of years ago when he said that no boy who had passed and put Tommies first choice had ever not received a place. Sounds good. :D Unfortunately that rule of thumb was broken both this year (2010 entry) and last. :(

Completely agree with that, My ds passed for Tommies but did not get place even thought it was specified as first choice on CAF. :(
