Congrats to everyone who has achieved what they needed......

Here we're in the twilight zone I think - 207 from HSFG. I'd be so grateful if anyone could advise me if all is now lost - realistically, I mean.

Many thanks
LM

Did you share results with Ribston or SHS? That would probably be enough to pass for one of those, I think?

Sorry to intrude but I'm fascinated by the concept of sharing results? How does that work?

Hi - thanks for replies. No - being new to the area and system, we (stupidly) only put 2 schools down. Durrrrrrrr. Is it too late for them to be shared? (I think I have read that it is on here... Clutching at straws or what!!)

So - should we still put HSFG down as our first preference, or do we have to appeal, or how does it work exactly?

Thanks in advance posting.php?mode=reply&f=16&t=28229#

Yeah, it's not a kind of Eucharistic brotherhood sharing type thing ('tell you what, you have my son's STRS result and I will have your child's Marling one') and it is all done with smoke and mirrors. When you register your child to sit the test here, you can opt for the results to be shared with the other grammar schools, because the test is the same. There is a hierarchy of GSs here, so you might not pass for the one with the highest entrance requirements, but still get into one of the others.

You might think this sounds kind of OK, but there is no standard system of marking, so that, for example, the pass mark for one of the boys' grammars is 210, which equates to nothing anyone can actually work out; for another, the pass mark is 107.5, which seems roughly equivalent to about 198 in the first school there.

Last year my son achieved a score which was 2 points below his friend for the grammar they are both now at. His score for another grammar was 3 points above that of the same friend. Same test. This is because the cohort is standardised differently, according to age and whoever else sat it.

You following this?

The children take one exam in October. The raw score from that exam can be sent to any other grammar in Glos for consideration as if the child had taken the exam at that school. It doesn't make any difference which school they sit it at.

Being an out of county thicky, does it affect your CAF choices or is it just that as you haven't shared so they won't share (all sounds a bit childish, sorry) so you have less information?

Is it the schools trying to get an indication of interest before CAF?

Is Alice still living in Wonderland?

You have to opt to share first, when you register to sit the test. They can't share afterwards because they have thrown the spell away. Think of that poor cauldron, sorry, computer, if you tried to add another child's score into the mix once the magic words had been said. That is why it is so difficult for parents like lolomimi, who haven't wised up to what those in the know do - share with every school to ensure that come the Worst Case Scenario, as many options as possible remain open.

Lolo- you will have to appeal if you still want a GS. You might do better appealing for Ribston or SHS as your DD might have met the pass mark there.

First, sorry to hear you had disappointing news. Hope you and DD are ok.

I am afraid the only thing you can do now is appeal because 207 is not a pass for HSFG. Am I right in thinking you also ticked to share with Pates but not Ribston Hall? 207 would have gained your DD a place at Ribston because the marks are approx 10 more for that school, her score would most likely have been 217 or 218 and their pass mark is also 210. You could try phoning Ribston and explaining your situation if you would like to try for a place at that school. I am sure someone can give you advice or point you to the right place. If you are set on Denmark Rd then you have to wait for March and try and appeal then. There is lots of appeal advice on the forum but it is not easy so you will need to consider what school to put on your CAF form, hopefully a good comp.

There is always some debate about whether to put the school you didn't pass for but want to appeal for on your CAF. Some people seem to but as far as I know it won't go against you if you don't put it on your CAF. However someone with more knowledge about this can probably give you a better answer.
all the best x

Sorry. So if you don't "share" you are kind of saying you're not interested so the school says we won't consider you if you later list us on your CAF?

lolomimi sorry to hijack your thread and I hope you can get a place that your DC deserves. :)
