The Plymouth one looks a bit of a non-story to me; maybe the journalist was hunting around on a slack news day for something to write. It's the same proceedure as here in Glos, by the sounds of it, and as one of the schools rightly said, put your top preference first and you won't risk anything if not offered it.

The same happens on allocation day when a small handful of parents complain that they hadn't been offered a place at a primary even though their great aunt Mable lives next door to the school, and the family have always sent their children there. Journalist lingers outside playgroups waiting to pick up a story...

The other stories did seem to me as if the schools hadn't bothered to read the draft admissions code that was circulated well in advance before it came into effect in Feb. The schools round here had all updated their admissions policies for this year to reflect any changes including putting them out to parents for consulatation. Gloucestershire had also altered the exam time a couple of years ago as good practice of letting parents have a rough idea of how their child did in the 11+ before putting down the choices on the CAF.

I think the wallpaper in the Plymouth photo is more worthy of an article...

Agreed about the Plymouth being a non story.. 360 girls for 240 places.. That's not bad odds.. Especially when you consider a good proportion won't acheive the mark..
