Year 9 admissions

According to my DS, Pate's have taken a new pupil into his year (9) to replace one who left for the US. The pupil came from one of the better-regarded independents.

What are the rules governing admissions after year 7 ? I assumed that if a place came up it would be offered to whoever was top of the waiting list (if they were still interested two years in), but this doesn't seem to be the case.

Anyone have any theories ?

There is an in year admission procedure-perhaps a change of circumstances/ good timing etc -

Areas vary as to how long the waiting list is kept going - unlikely to be anything like 2 years, there is usually an in year procedure with assessment
