Hi,

My DS was wondering whether there will be a clock in the room and how he will know how much time he has left. Will they announce when the time is half way through? Will they tell them when they have 5 minutes left? Does he need to bring a watch?

Thanks

DS1 got caught out by this when he took the test three years ago at Pate’s.

I had told him he would probably get a five or a one minute warning before the end of the paper, but to keep an eye on his watch or the clock.

On the day he sat immediately under and to the left of the clock in the room. Because of a simple parallax error he assumed he had a couple of minutes left. He was also expecting a warning.

He didn’t get one, just a ”pencils down now please”. This rattled him (and others), as he’d had a warning for the first paper and had been expecting to use the final few minutes to guess the answers to those questions he wasn't sure about. He left a dozen questions without any answer, which of course convinced him (and us) that he was doomed.

Fortunately he passed with flying colours and got a place at Pates, but be warned that there doesn’t seem to be any directive on issuing warnings about time running out – some invigilators do it, others don’t.

Email the school your dc is sitting at ask the questions about timings/ warnings. Each seems to be a bit different.. But at least then you have it in black and white. :-)

Hi everyone. We sat the exam in Stroud High last year and they have given 25 and 10 minutes warnings. My DD1 had a watch and followed it herself as she was trained to do it at her tutors'.
