Hi. This year is our first experience of the 11 plus. DS has got top 120 for Marling and scored 219 for STRS. I thought we would get a ranking for STRS so am confused about what his chances for getting in are. Do STRS give a top 108 (their published intake is 108) or do they only give the score?
STRS is our first choice, but would also be very happy with Marling, so not too concerned but it would be nice to clarify if all the letters from STRS only give score not ranking.
I'd be very grateful if anyone can shed light on this! Thanks

If you look at the Results thread as well as the discussion thread you will see others in a similar position.

It is highly likely that 219 will be enough for STRS - it has been in recent years. STRS do not give rankings, only scores. From their website (I am sure you have seen this already but maybe in the excitement it didn't sink in - I do understand that feeling):
Quote:
How are places allocated?
Whether your son will be allocated a place at Sir Thomas Rich’s school will depend upon:
 How many pupils have scored a higher standardised mark for our school than your child
 How many of those children have stated a preference for our school, and
 How many of those children have stated a higher preference for another school and whether
they have met the criteria for a place at that school.
Sir Thomas Rich’s will offer places to the highest scoring children until we reach our admission number of 108. We are likely to have more pupils who pass the test than can be offered a place.

They can never be sure as it is not predictable how many whose children passed for other schools will choose STRS ahead of them. The admissions team try to make a pass mean a place, and managed it the year before last, but not last year.

HTH and well done to your son.

Hi Amber does that mean that there were kids who passed last year who did not get a GS place? I guess there will always be some OOC who are really after a place at the closest GS school to them and go elsewhere due to logistics whilst other can be a more flexible about the situation and would go to any school offering a place. Difficult juggling act to administer.

I don't know DC17C - I reckon probably most just went to other GSs, though logically what you say might be true. I think Crypt mopped up a lot who wanted STRS first, though I think with the improving profile and popularity of Crypt this may change again. I was told (reliable source) that a higher than usual number of Pates passers chose STRS last year, so not sure how many that actually is as Pates apparently didn't go below below 137 (?or 136) last year, vs having to call number 161 on the list a few years back (which is why they started ranking to 180 instead of 160 - another reliable source).

It is a nasty system with an unwritten heirarchy which may be changing - and very hard for new parents to take it all in. :(

Totally agree with this -all very confusing which I guess is why I am still here.

Last year Pates went down to 134 only and most of those kids who declined a place went to Indies schools.
