Sorry butting in here but if anyone not in Glos is thinking about this do check the rules for each grammar before applying. For example for the two Tiffin schools in Surrey, if you have not qualified for their 11 plus you can't reapply until sixth form.

No, it's different in Glos. If you have taken the 11+ test in Glos and been unsuccessful, you can ask the school directly (from the beginning of year 7) if there are spaces. If there are, you take the test outlined in my above post. There is one exception to the rule, which is if you have not passed the 11+ then appealed against the decision in year 6. In that case you are not allowed entry until year 8. Plenty of students do apply near the end of year 7 and, if they pass the school test, gain entry in year 8. They go on to be very successful, so shows the 11+ is not always the best indication of academic potential!
