Hello,
Currently reside in North Bristol and was wondering if anyone commutes to Marling from Bristol. If the answer is yes, can you tell me how and what the journey is like

I would imagine that that trip would be complicated and long. There are trains to Gloucester and Swindon from Bristol then change for Stroud but nothing direct. The drive isn't so bad.

Do you have a (prospective) place at Marling? Did you choose any other Glos. Grammars?

Yes ds got qualifying scores for both Marling and Crypt. When we started the 11 plus journey we were aiming for Pates ; he didnt qualify. Journey was simpler. Our new dilema is which school to put for first option. We are off to Crypt tomorrow and Marling next week. Hope the visits help clears things up

I am sure you are thinking really hard about this.
There are no direct trains to Stroud from Bristol and if there was a bus it would be a horrible tortuous journey.

You would be able to get the train from Parkway to Gloucester but it then would be a bus ride to Crypt.
its a pretty tough commute for a year 7.

And in addition consider the fact that you too would need to make journeys to school for parents evenings, socials and concerts; pick up after clubs, sports events and occasionally collect a sick child from school. Your child is unlikely to have any friends as school who live near to your home, and will miss out on socialising etc.

I do know people who travel from Kingswood/Wickwar to the Stroud Grammars on a recently extended bus route. But no further than that.

Have you tried contacting Marling to see if there are any current parents nearby?

Tommies have helped us with a lift share this year.

I am sure you are already doing this - but ask yourself really honestly if Marling or Crypt are really so much better than the school your son would be going to anyway. Enough to warrant this kind of journey for the next six years, day in, day out.

Yes, I have done nothing but think about the whole situation. The problem is Bristol schools are not on the same standard as Gloucestershire schools. We are not in the catchment of a good comprehensive or academy. I went to Crypt and asked the same questions and got the same replies you all gave me. My husband and I have decided to move after we know ds allocation. I will have to commute to Bristol for work. Our new problem will be getting a good primary for dd in Cam/Dursley area.
