actual ranking

If ds is in Top 120 for a school and we wanted to find out where he is in that 120 do you think admissions will tell us?
He passed for Pates but just worried that if he is 120 out of 120 then he will be playing catch up and may struggle. Know that sounds silly but if he went to one of the other grammars and was say in top 30 he would do better. How close together do you think the marks at the grammars are if: how close is positions no1's score to no 120? Are they all similar ish within a couple of marks do you think?
Feeling silly for asking

I'm not a tutor so if you posted in the tutor section hoping for one to reply then sorry.

Firstly the range of marks of successful pupils is likely to be tiny, with many sitting on one or two scores - the standardisation system makes this impossible to extrapolate but it is probable that many of the other successful pupils will have the same score as your child and the difference between 'pass' and 'fail' is really tiny - you are literally looking at tenths of a mark.

Secondly, there is no correlation between ranking on getting into a school and GCSE grades - several posters have put this on here in the past. Similarly, pupils who get into selective schools on appeal because they were borderline do not do worse than those who sailed in. Kids never discuss where they were in the rankings once they start school and it is all forgotten.

Thirdly, 'struggling' is a wide concept and most pupils who 'struggle' at school do so for a range of reasons usually only loosely related to their academic ability.

Stop fretting. If Pates is where you want your child to go, send him there. :D

I don't think they will tell you they don't want everyone discussing who got the highest ranking etc and it does not matter - and there is no need to worry. I would guess your child has been doing well in primary school for you to decide it was worth doing the test- your DC has done very well in test and would fit in, cope and do well in any of the grammar schools.

I know what you mean, schools like Pate's are brilliant for most of their students but I wouldn't want DS to be at the bottom of the pile and would rather top-middle of another school. Maybe talk to his teachers - see if they have any feelings. What is your child like? Organised? Keen? Motivated? The opposite?

Ok ok fret over. Thank you for responding. Yes, I think I am worrying over it as Pâtés was unexpected. He is able and had always flown at school with high CAT / levels. DH says that I am a worrier about it but I am just in awe of the schools reputation. It's just stuffed full of mega bright kids. If I take my own insecurities awaythen in my heart of Hearts he will cope anywhere.
Thanks once again for responding. I'm going to have a Sunday chill out and wait till the open days now for a final decision to be made by us/DS. Still feel a bit silly though!

It is stuffed full of kids who passed the test on the day, some of them with higher scores than those who go to other grammar schools and some not - some kids who pass do choose to go elsewhere - there are certainly quite a few at Tommies. There are still kids who find some subjects difficult and especially by the time you get to sixth form there are kids who really do not cover themselves in glory at every turn. OK it is a relatively narrow mix of ability and social background, but it is still a mix- they aren't all super-intellectual clones and that fact becomes more obvious the further away from the 11 plus you get.

Quite right Amber - always some who seem to have had their one moment of total brilliance on the day of the 11 plus and others who start to really excel in some subjects while hardly being above the bottom in others. There are alwasy kids who get in on appeal or waiting list and do absolutely stunningly.
