I should add a little comment that after posting the above, a flurry of activity does appear to have stirred, and quite a few very reasonable excuses have been offered to explain the poor turnout at the "pot luck supper" subcommittee meeting.

I'm not sure if it's a permanent thing that responsibility for fund-raising has been taken away, but it certainly makes life easier (and events cheaper).
