Just wondering if you have any recommendation of books that are useful that will give us the techniques and stuff for DD 11+ We tried the demo maths here and thats when i realised it was inappropriate as DD had no clue about some of the stuff like prime numbers and square number

I found the IPS verbal resononing method and techniques very good and wondered if there is something similar for Maths...It will be for Kent 11+

Math’s does vary from region to region, a good place to start is to look at the free KS2 Math’s papers, http://www.emaths.co.uk/KS2SAT.htm.

AE seem to be very good at breaking it down into "bite size" bits for kids.

It is not as easy as VR 21 types.

I use the IPS 10 minute tests, have found them very useful.
Some of the Bond books are good too.

If it is for Kent you will need to be looking at multiple choice rather than standard format as you get nearer to the test.

One of the main areas you should work on is quick recall of tables, including the squares

factors of a number, a prime number is one which has only 2 factors

area and perimeter

The tests are set by Nfer so it will be worth getting the GL practice papers (available on this site or from bookshops) They will show you the sorts of questions that are likely to appear in the test

I will try the AE books, we are also using games for times table and will start working on the quick recalls

Glad you said that Sherry, we tried the maths test too on here and my dd could do very little of it!

Re: 21 types for VR -is that outlined in the book you mentioned. I have VR bond book and it doesnt mention it.

Also got a bond book called how to do 11+ maths and that looks great (havent properly read it yet!) and has lots of parent tips and explains concepts.

The Bond book is very good.

Kent VR is the 15 types on the GL assessment practice papers, although occasionally one of the other 6 types has cropped up.

I have a list somewhere of which types they ar according to IPS and Susan Daughtrey books. Bear with me it may take some finding!

These are the IPS ones

A = Insert a letter
B = Related words
C = Word letter codes
D = Closest meaning
E = Hidden word
F = Missing word
G = Letters for numbers
J = Move a letter
L = Letter series
M = Word connections
P = Number series
Q = Compound words
R = Make a word
U = Letter connections
Z = Reading information

H = Opposite meaning
I = Complete the sum
K = Related numbers
N = Word-number codes
O = Complete the word
S = Same meaning

The ones in red do not USUALLY come up , but I often cover them as well just in case. Athey and Bond are not relevant to the kent test.

There are some interactive CDs/Downloads and papers by the Tutors which are relevant to the Kent test. Their questions have numbers rather than letters. The first 15 types correspond to the types in black aboove and 16 - 21 correspond to teh HIKNOS questions.
Susan daughtrey practice tests are also relevant, but NOT her method and technique books.

I tend to use a variety of materials from different authors.
Don't forget word games like scrabble and upwords. There is also an excdellent site www.freerice.com which helps improve vocbulary. Keep a notebook and write down any unfamiliar words that you come across and then look up the definition.

Jigsaws, spot teh difference puzzles and games like Tetris are also good at developing the skills needed for NVR. Hope that helps.

Thnaks Yoyo123 for the detailed response....I wonder why my local WHS has loads on Bond books on the 11+ when they are not relevant. I guess the manager hasnt got a clue what we need here in Kent

Also I cant find the IPS 10 minute tests you suggested is it the same as the Bond 10 mins tests?

Sorry , my fault they are Daily practice tests byIPS.

The stocking irrelevant material is a thprn in my side!
In Canterbury Waterstones they at least have a sign saying that Standard format are not suitable for Kent Test. I suppose that stock is ordered nationally. There is a huge shroud of mystery about 11+.

I suppose Bond don't do Kent compliant 11 plus materials..?
