Hi...I'm fairly new to this forum but have just read this thread with great interest..I joined the forum with my year 5 child in mind but also have a year 3 child currently on school action plus. The local school cluster group (we are in Kent) got a specialist cognitive learning expert in to assess her. She is having a very hard time with regard literacy and sees a dyslexia tutor twice a week .However she did very well in nvr and the IQ test gave a result of 145. My question is with regards the 11+ and Sats ..does anyone know if you have to have an ed psych report done to enable her to have extra time for these tests? Thanks in advance!!

Are you asking about your year 3? If so don't worry about the mechanics yet, you have lots of time and the game (rules ) may change.

It is good to ask early and often.

That is very hard as a parent to understand, you know she has the ability/inteligence but society asks for a literacy test that disadvantages your child.

I would seek some outside opinion and help.

Hi tigger2, can't help as far as SATS are concerned but I'm pretty sure that Kent do not allow extra time for the 11+. However, like stevew61 says things might change and you should keep asking and checking.

Has your daughter been statemented, becuase there is a different admissions procedure if a child has, but like said above, you still have a few years to go.

Hi..Thank you very much for your replies. I was casting an eye over the SEN posts and thought that I would just throw this out though I appreciate that this may (and probably will!) change over the next couple of years. We have not,as yet, asked to start the statementing process. Some new strategies have been put in place since September so we have been advised to wait and see if any progress is made and review in December. Like most parents I joined this forum to gain further advice and insight into the 11plus for our eldest but mindful of the fact that the next few years will go in a flash I am trying to think ahead for our youngest too as I would like to be as informed as possible when we have to make choices in years 5 and 6.

I know for definite that extra time cannot be allowed for the actual 11+ exams but extra time (15 mins) is given for various reasons on the written part which is only used for appeals.

I can verify that this is correct as my daughter was given this extra time last September due to long term health issues and evidence provided by myself, my GP and GOSH before the test.

Our Head suggested it to me and organised the extra time the week before the tests.

I have never posted before but felt I had to respond. My DD is dyslexic and at Grammar and very happy. We applied for extra time with kent but was only given extra time for the essay. My daughter is not statemented and the primary school never acknowledged (sorry about the spelling dyslexia runs in our family) that she had a problem until she was in year 6
The letter we recieved from kent acknowlegded that our DD was 11+ material from our educ phy report, and if she didn't pass we could use there own letter as part of an appeal
Be as vocal as possible the school gave us no help but we got our place, the grammar has been the perfect place for her and they have been more than helpful in her day to day difficulties

They have also applied for more time for her GCSEs and have kept her fully upto date with everthing that they are doing.
people are surprised that she is Dyslexic, our DD is proud of the fact yours should be too. Good Luck

There are several private ed psychs who work in Kent. It may be worth googling or looking in Yellow Pages.

The school may also be able to organise this, talk to the class teacher or the Senco.

You can also look up for an Ed Psych on the British Pschology Society website.

However, if you are thinking of using one I would only some one that was recommended.

Thank you to all of you that have replied.It was great to hear that Horsymum's DD is doing so well at a Grammar . It sounds like you had a battle on your hands and I'm so glad you got the place. It gives me hope!!!
