I have a few years yet before the need for my children to understand the implications of the 11+ in Kent. However coming from the Midlands I am a little confused regarding the terms 'comp' 'and 'secondary'. Are there any true comprehensives in East Kent?

Yes. Kent has comprehensive areas and eleven plus areas but there are more of the latter.
