Some advice from all you experienced 11 plus parents please

I'm just working out a rough idea of what we need to do by when. DD1 will be taking the test in September 2014 ........ so far and yet so close.

A tutor round here told me that we should be aiming, amongst other things, to have covered the Bond Assessment papers age 10-11 in VR, NVR and Maths.

This has got me thinking as DD1 is just 8, and will start year 4 in September 2012. Working backwards this means I need to do the 10-11 papers in year 5 (as the test is at the start of year 6), the 9-10 papers in year 4, and the year 8-9 papers now?

Does this sound feasible? And is it the right advice? DD1 is young for the year, so if she does the 9-10 papers in year 4, she will be under 9 for the majority of that school year.

at this stage I would just concentrate on vocab, NVR skills like spot the difference , jigsaws etc. and making sure mental arithmetic and tables are super dooperly good.

Bond is not particularly relevant for Kent, esp for the VR

What do you think is a better fit for Kent than the Bond assessment papers, in the way of practice materials? Subject by subject if necessary please!

I am looking ahead, not for right now, and I think from where we live and the year group we are in we are going to have to be thinking of TOGS type scores in order not to have a heart attack on 1 March.

Oops, just read the sticky about best materials for Kent. Still interested in the answer to my Bond question above though.

Yoyo, eek. My tutor has used Bond a lot during the last year.

Oooh Mystery. Posts like yours are one of the reasons we decided not to Tutor DS for the 11+. The thought of working backwards and which paper to do when sends shivers down my spine.
However, I have done this with a previous child so I am not anti-tutoring/practising - just this time i guess trying to go a bit more with the flow and my sons natural ability.
Or maybe after 4 kids I just dont have the energy to nag them anymore :?
Good luck with your timetabling

 It's not sending shivers down my spine instead it's making me feel a bit spineless and that I am unlikely to get my DD1 to do anything much at all. She'll probably be enthusiastic for the first two or three papers and then it will become a nag and a drag; or she'll suddenly go very stupid and be unable to do anything without tiddlywinks or a numberline!!!

But I'm going to try because school is striking me as potentially a bit hit and miss over the next few years.
