as you're considering Townley, I assume you have a daughter?! We did the tour of the grammars (and non -selectives) last October. My daughter does not start until this September so I can only comment on what we saw at the open evenings.
Obviously the grammars are all following more or less the same curriculum, with some difference in which year they start a 2nd foreign language and latin. They each have speacialist status in different areas and had better facilities in these fields.
As the school open evenings were before the 11+, the tours of the schools were very crowded, especially in the evenings. This also meant though that we bumped into a large number of parents and pupils from my daughter's primary and it was interesting to see how different people gained totally different impressions of the schools even though we had had more or less the same tour and heard the same Headteacher's speech!
The school I thought my daughter would love , we felt disappointed with. The one I had some reservations about (admittedly based on when I was choosing a secondary school some 26 years ago!) we were very impressed with and got a really positive feel from.
So, I would really say, see them all with an open mind. You'll find somebody with good and bad to say about any school, but try not to let yourself be put off. Most people we spoke to just said that one 'felt right', and all the schools seemed keen to produce well rounded individuals rather than just robots capable of passing exams.
