Judd, Skinners, TWGSB appeal dates

I am under the impression that TWGSB has issued appeal dates but think that the other two haven't.

Bearing in mind the fact that the 11+ results were issued back in March, and that the schools have arranged new intake parents evenings, does anybody else find it totally appalling that these schools have not managed to get their @@@@@ in gear and sort this out?

Children are going through all sorts of torment, not knowing which school they are going to, and having to miss intake evenings at schools they hope to attend, yet go to intake evenings at schools they wish not to be at.

If the schools are able to arrange parents/new students evenings, surely they can sort out the appeals?

I sympathise. It makes me wonder if it somehow suits them to delay the appeals for as long as possible. For example, any places that become available when existing pupils who have accepted places then cancel (for instance due to a change of circumstances) - these places can be offered immediately to people on their waiting list. Waiting list people will presumably be higher up the school's subscription priorities than appeals people. Or maybe I am just being cynical here. I can imagine this might apply particularly to Judd and Skinners, who both select on scores.

Anything wrong with that approach Man of Kent? Don't kids on waiting lists also deserve to know where they are going, and should they really be leapfrogged by less qualified children whose parents are willing to go through the hassle of appeal?

Nothing personal by the way. I don't have a child on a waiting list. Just a thought.

Perhaps there is nothing wrong with it from the school's point of view, if they only take the narrow view I suggested. As you say, this would also be OK for a child who is high up on the waiting list. I am just saying that I can also sympathise with the point of view of those who are appealing - I am sure that some of these people will have compelling grounds for appeal and thus may be strongly deserving of a place too. It is unfortunate that there is no perfect way of managing this.

I know that TWGSB are undergoing appeals right now. My friend has their appeal tomorrow. I also thought that Skinners had already undertaken their appeals but I could be wrong on that one.

Local paper has job adverts asking for appeal panel members for Judd. States dates as being June and July.

Oh great, so those people who have been sweating for a place since the 11+ results were published on the 1st March have the possibility of ending the school year not knowing what school their children will be attendnig in September.

And the children might be saying goodbye to their friends expecting to see them at their new school, only to go somewhere different.

The state of flux and the disruptiveness of the unknown is just not acceptable.

This is, to put it mildly, very unhelpful on several fronts. Inevitably there is a perceived hierarchy of schools - see other threads and don’t blame me - with children who will release places at TWGSB if they get a Judd/Skinners place. This won’t happen until July, confusing the already difficult picture for TWGSB who have had to take in children from recent appeals and who are presumably doing some delicate calculations on class size/distribution which will be subsequently altered. The problems continue to other schools. Those awarded TWGSB will release places for high schools and distant grammars and so on. With the Judd/Skinners appeals so late, some year 6 pupils will not be sorted out in time for their secondary school day in July, and the appeals/waiting list is thrown into confusion with movement throughout the summer holiday when we should be taking a break from all this.

I thought Skinners had already done their appeals. I remember seeing the advert for their panel in advance of the the results coming out. However, I could be wrong. It may have been that they had problems getting the panel together. Not only do the Judd appeals affect TWGSB, but also Skinners, who also appeal for places at Judd. All in all, it's a bit of a mess. The only positive thing is that it could give TWGSB a bit more breathing space, although I would imagine only a small number of students will win appeals elsewhere.

I do know that Judd IS holding appeals on 10,12 and 18th July. I was on the appeal list for this, but have now come off.

What a pity this appeal process has dragged on. My "dilemma" (although I recognise that there are many out there who would give a lot to be an our position) is as follows:


We have just been advised that our appeal for TWGS has been successful. We also appealed to the Judd but have yet to be given an appeal date. We are minded to go ahead with the Judd appeal on the basis that we have little to lose. But if we accept a place at TWGS will our appeal for Judd be compromised? Is the Judd appeal panel entitled to ask whether our son has already secured a place at another grammar school? If so, presumably our case for Judd is weakened!

Any thoughts?
