kent test 2013

Was the maths paper on this years kent test particularly difficult. It was the paper that my son scored lowest on and other mums at school said the same, even for kids who had maths as their best subject normally.

Historically the maths test is usually (but not always) the one that surprises people and that children find most difficult.
I am generalising here but from my own 10 years of experience of the kent test is what I've found.
It's probably largely due to the fact that is easier to make mistakes in maths when under pressure than the other papers.

Our HT said they felt all the tests were the hardest they had been for a few years.

I haven't seen DS's raw scores yet so I'm not entirely sure, but I do know that maths is one subject where a lot of boys in particular can score a hundred percent. So when one is standardising the score across an entire population, I would expect the raw score in maths required to score 141 to be relatively higher than for the other subjects.

They've probably increased the difficulty slightly in all the tests to help differentiate at the top end, following last years results.

I agree , my DS scored the lowest in maths . That is usually his strongest paper

Us too, full marks on VR and NVR but quite a big drop in maths which has always been his strongest subject.

Same here. Presumably some DC must have scored full marks on the maths though - isn't that the point of the standardisation, so that you get the spread of marks?

Around 25 percent of childre have to have passed the maths paper just like the others. If there is a statistically significant difference in the pass rate at your school in maths versus the other papers, this points to something about the maths at that school.

141 is at the 95th centile. So 5% of pupils will have scored 141 - and only 5%! Equally, 120 is at the 79th centile, so 21% will have scored above that. 16% of all pupils will have scored between 120 and 141, so when a paper is marked out of 50, it isn't surprising that a 1 or 2 raw score marks make a 2-5 standardise mark difference,
